From 19th – 22nd September 2013 the Finals of the Downhill World Cup year and the Four Cross World Championships take place in Saalfelden Leogang. After last year’s World Championships a successful and euphoric stock could be taken: more than 43.500 spectators, 750 bikers and 350 journalists turned the world’s biggest mountain bike event of 2012 into one big success. In five different disciplines, World Champions had to be found. Cross Country, Trials and the new discipline XC Eliminator were carried out in Saalfelden, Downhill and Four Cross in the Bikepark in Leogang.
Because of the perfect realization of this event, the international cycling union (UCI) decided to again make Saalfelden Leogang the host of this year’s Downhill Final of the World Cup year 2013 and of the Four Cross World Championships. Similar to the World Cups in 2010 and 2011, the international heroes of mountain bike-sports will meet up in the holiday region on the long weekend at the end of September to determine the fastest among them.
The decision to not carry out the Four Cross World Championships in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa), but rather in Saalfelden Leogang, was only made in February 2013. It is the first time that a Four Cross World Championships is not held in the context of the UCI Mountainbike & Trials WM. UCI MTB-coordinator Peter van den Abeele’s opinion is: “In Saalfelden Leogang there is great enthusiasm about the Four Cross World Championships. This could bring a completely new dynamic into the discipline.” Already during the Four Cross Pro Tour Finals in the week before (14th -15th September 2013), the Four Cross World Championships competitors have a chance to test the track and to prepare optimally for the World Championships. Who knows - maybe this competition already shows who the world champion of 2013 could be?
